Sershong Lhakang, Kurtoe, Buthan

Rinpoche's maternal grandfather, Lama Sonam Zangpo, was instrumental in establishing many monasteries and lay communities in Bhutan, such as the temple of Sershong Lhakang, which offers three-year retreats, practicing the Six Yogas of Naropa according to the Drukpa Kagyü tradition.

While Lama Sonam Zangpo was alive, he intimated to Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche that he would like him to take care of Sershong Lhakang in Kurtoe. The village of Kurtoe is located at the far north-east of Bhutan, very close to the China-Tibet border. It is Lama Sonam Zangpo's home village, and therefore Sershong Lhakang is one of the main monastic seats in northern Bhutan for Lama Sonam Zangpo.

Presently Lama Rinzin Samdrup, under Rinpoche's guidance, oversees the development of Sershong Lhakang. Associated with this temple is Goesh Pang Lhakang, which is located in the same village. At Goesh Pang Lhakang, thirty young children are studying to become gomchens (unordained yogic practitioners). Both of these lhakangs are under the guidance of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche.
