Dzongsar Monastery, Tibet

The history of this monastery goes back more than a thousand years. In the 13th century it was established as a Sakyapa monastery with the visit of the great master Drogön Chögyal Phagpa (1235-1280). In recent times, it was the residence of Jamyang Khyentse Wangpo (1821-1892) and his incarnation, Jamyang Khyentse Chökyi Lodrö (1894-1959). During the lives of these two extraordinary spiritual leaders, Dzongsar Monastery became a centre for a nonsectarian approach to the study and practice of Buddhism, known as the rimé movement, and lamas of all four Tibetan traditions came here to study. The monastery was destroyed under Communist rule, but has been rebuilt in recent years. The present Dzongsar Khyentse incarnation, Thubten Chökyi Gyamtso, supervises the Dzongsar Institute, where 250 monks are being educated.
