Join us for 3 days of shamatha and vipashyana teachings and meditation at Sea to Sky Retreat Centre (SSRC), April 02-05, 2010 (Easter long-weekend.) This retreat will be lead by Alex Trisoglio, a teaching and practice instructor of Siddhartha's Intent and a senior student of Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche.

Shamatha and Vipashyana Meditation as explained by Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche

"We practise shamatha in order to be natural or, to use more practical language, to gain control of our mind. Most of the time we are not in control of ourselves. Our mind is always distracted with something - our enemies, our lovers, our friends, hope and fear, attachment, aggression - there is always something. The world controls our minds; we have little control over it."

"Even though the real essence of mind is not rigid, our mind has become rigid because of our basic insecurity. But we can train our mind. We can make this rigid mind flexible, workable. As Shantideva said, when we practise shamatha, the hiding place of the ego will collapse."

"The word 'meditation' always seems to refer to a certain body posture, a relaxation, not thinking too much - hopefully thinking nothing, but if not that, maybe thinking only one or two things. Being quiet, externally and internally. But on the more profound level, one of the most important elements of meditation is the Tibetan word 'shak,' which means, 'Leave it alone.'"

"Vipashyana means 'clear seeing'. Ordinary beings like us don't see things clearly. Our perceptions are distracted and distorted with prejudice and bias. Seeing something clearly means leaving it alone. When you apply vipashyana, there's a sense that anything could happen: it might work, it might not work. At the same time you have no hope and no fear. So applying the wisdom of vipashyana in our day-to-day life - even the most mundane experience in our life - is what Mahayana Buddhists aim for."

"The aim of all Buddhist practice is to catch a glimpse of the awakened state. Going on pilgrimage, soaking up the sacred atmosphere of holy places and mingling with other pilgrims are simply different ways of trying to achieve that glimpse." Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche

Siddhartha's Intent and Khyentse Foundation jointly announce that a
preview of Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche's advice, What to do at India's
Buddhist Holy Sites, is available as a free PDF download upon formal request.

Rinpoche wrote the book in response to the questions students
frequently ask about going on pilgrimage to Buddhist holy sites. What
to do at India's Buddhist Holy Sites is not a guidebook for ordinary
tourists, but for Buddhists who wish to purify their defilements and
accumulate merit by going on pilgrimage. Focussing primarily on the
teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha and the great Indian masters of the
past, Rinpoche offers pilgrims advice on every aspect of pilgrimage:
where to go, what to do, the meaning of pilgrimage and generating the
right motivation before leaving home. He explains what Buddhists mean
when they describe a person, place or object as being 'holy'. Included
are suggestions for which prayers and practices one can do at the four
main Buddhist holy sites in India and Nepal.

Way of the Bodhisattva (in Sanskrit, Bodhicaryavatara) is
universally regarded as a quintessential instruction on the
practice of the Mahayana path. Its poetic beauty and provocative
thought makes for a most expansive presentation of the very
heart of Buddhism: the possibility of removing fundamental
confusion and uncovering the basic brilliance common to all
                    life.

The
extraordinary dimension of this work is reflected in its origin:
in the early 8th century the author, Shantideva, was studying
at the prestigious Buddhist university of Nalanda. Giving
everyone the impression he was a thoroughly unmotivated and
lazy student, he was challenged to give a public lecture,
to justify his expulsion after presumably proving his lack
of learning. To the surprise of all he confidently delivered
this original and supremely profound teaching, 'The Way of
the Bodhisattva', which immediately all recognized as sublime.
As Shantideva proceeded to the final sections of the teaching,
he is said to gradually have risen into the air, until finally
                    only his voice was heard.

As
Buddhism was brought to Tibet, the lineage of practice and
realization of 'The Way of the Bodhisattva' was continued,
