Yashodhara Publications supplies texts to monasteries, institutions and lay practitioners in India, Nepal and Bhutan, and to students and libraries abroad. During the time that the United States Library of Congress was collecting rare Tibetan literature, Yashodhara was one of its main suppliers. Yashodhara is now also publishing contemporary commentaries and biographies maintaining the living tradition of Tibetan Buddhist literature.

The published materials are mainly reprints of old wood block print versions of the traditional Tibetan pecha using photo reproduction offset printing. The quality of the original wood block-printed pecha depends on the age of the woodblock, the method and skill of the wood block carvers, the quality of the paper and ink, together with the skill of the original printers. Some of the woodblocks unavoidably contain errors as well. Many versions of texts have been printed in the past and suitable good prints are obtained for reproduction; however, for the above reasons, the photo reproductions require retouching - both on the negative and on the final printing plate. As some of the works contain up to 25 volumes each of about 300 pages, with a print run of up to 500 copies, the work and the cost is extensive. Yashodhara Publications is staffed by monks who collect, reproduce and distribute the texts.

Because of the deteriorating conditions of rarer texts and the existence of some as hand written works, Yashodhara Publications has commenced entering many of these using Tibetan word processing on computers. The superior and standardised calligraphic reproduction bv high resolution laser print and the ability to enter corrections with ease offer the ability to produce high quality works. The process also enables the preservation of these rare texts in digital computer files.

To date about 60 texts have been published. As manv of the texts are supplied to monasteries at cost or at a subsidised rate, continuation of the work has onlv been possible through generous sponsorship from within India and abroad.
