The teaching

All composed things are like a dream,
A phantom, a drop of dew, a flash of lightning.

One of the principle works in the Prajna Paramita teachings, the Diamond Sutra is one of the great classics of Mahayana Buddhism. The original Sanskrit title is 'Vajracchedika-prajnaparamita-sutra', literally the Vajra Cutter, referring to the wisdom of transcendental intelligence which, like a diamond (vajra), cuts through the illusions that blind and deceive.

This teaching was given by the Buddha to his close disciple Subhuti. The Buddha encourages Subhuti to observe how reality is, rather than how it appears. Addressing this innate wisdom, the Buddha encourages his student to cut through habitual beliefs, and engage in the fearless great vision of the bodhisattvas. The Buddha presents the greatness of such wisdom, and how to engage in its practice.

The Diamond Sutra has been venerated throughout Buddhist history as a supreme source of inspiration and spiritual power. However, the supreme inspiration and power lies in the integration of its message. It is not a magic formula invoking any exterior power or savior. In the sutra the Buddha says: "Someone who looks for me in form or seeks me in sound is on a mistaken path and cannot see the Buddha".

All proceeds from this teaching event go to Lotus Outreach. Lotus Outreach is a non-religious organization that uses a hands-on approach to help children, families, and communities. Every pound Lotus Outreach receives is used to educate young people and build sustainable community programs worldwide.
