Uttaratantra of Arya Maitreya
Part I

Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche

The first in a series of annual teachings on Asanga's great classic Mahayana Buddhist text on the buddha nature

Dordogne, France
11-20 August, 2003

Space, whose nature is free of concepts;
Encompasses everything;
Likewise, the stainless expanse of the mind's true nature
Permeates all beings.

Maitreya - Asanga

We all possess an unconditioned and unchanging core of awakening, or buddhanature, however deep our confusion and suffering. From the point of view of this intrinsic nature, there is no difference between the exalted Buddha and ordinary sentient beings. Anyone who removes what obscures his or her true nature will become a buddha.

The Buddha Maitreya gave the Uttaratantra teaching to the great Buddhist master Asanga. One of the great classical texts of Mahayana Buddhism, it is particularly regarded as a bridge to the Vajrayana teachings, presenting how buddhanature exists within us, how it is approached, and what are the qualities of manifest buddhahood.

A Message from Dzongsar Khyentse Rinpoche - Rinpoche recently issued this statement encouraging those interested in studying this teaching with him not to wait further:

"All those who have an interest in the teaching and commentary on the Madhyamikavatara (to be held in San Francisco, USA) and Uttaratantra (to be held in Dordogne, France), should be advised that I will be presenting these programs over several years, beginning this year. I do not want anyone to put off attending these teachings now in the hope that they might be offered again in such an extensive fashion at some future date."

Venue and Practical Details

This teaching will take place in the depth of a very beautiful area of France, in the Dordogne region of the Perigord. It is about 100 miles east of Bordeaux, and near the famous Lascaux caves. As most will know, Rinpoche teaches in English, and the vast majority of the organisers and staff speak English.

The organisers, Association de Centre d'Etudes de Chanteloube, offer to keep you updated about this event by email. To receive an email, go to their website (www.chanteloube.asso.fr) and register to be updated. They have an English language page. Go to their "program" page, click on "subscription," and fill in your email address where prompted. Also, you can visit their "practical" page for information about how to get there, accommodation, etc. As further information becomes available it will be posted here as well.
