An Introduction to Shamatha

Training the Mind to Abide in One-Pointed Concentration

Shamatha meditation is a remarkably effective method of training the mind, increasing the powers of concentration, observation, and perception. It improves the memory and allows one to gain control over the mind, so that it isn't so easily swept away by distractions and emotions. It provides a wonderful antidote to stressful circumstances, whether created by outer conditions or the pain and discomforts of illness and mental distress. Using this method of focusing the mind in an open, relaxed way, even for a short time every day, gives one a greater ability to learn and understand things and develops one's natural positive qualities such as patience, calmness, and compassion.
